For the development of a fully automated battery testing system for a manufacturer of electric aircrafts, Strama-MPS relied on Safion's innovative measurement technology. With the help of an easily integrated component set and intelligent software, battery cells are evaluated and processed within seconds.
In electrified aviation, some of the most demanding requirements are placed on batteries - both on a technical and regulatory level, the battery is considered a zero-tolerance component. To meet these requirements and develop battery systems with maximum safety and performance, the quality of each individual cell installed is crucial.
Strama-MPS' customer therefore only sources high-quality battery cells from reputable manufacturers. Nevertheless, even among these cells, there are sometimes significant differences in quality that lead to the deterioration of interconnected battery systems. These systems produce less power, age more quickly, and pose unpredictable safety risks.
To ensure the quality of incoming cells, Strama-MPS was contracted to build a fully automated facility with a daily cell throughput in the upper four-digit range. For this, a new type of measurement technology was required, as usual battery measurement methods are not capable of assessing each individual cell with the necessary precision and speed.
OUR SOLUTION APPROACH
For the customer's high quality requirements, they were looking for a solution that would enable reliable, highly precise and fast measurements and evaluations of their cells. At the same time, it had to be easy to operate and integrate into their fully automated plant with minimal effort.
With the help of the ExaMight integration kit, Safion was able to provide all the necessary mechanical, electrical and software components required for a fully automated evaluation of the entire cell input. For this purpose, the ExaMight measurement unit was integrated as the central control system. Operated via intuitive software, it forwards measurement signals to special contacting components that enable extremely reliable, reproducible measurements.
Safion's innovative Real-Time-EIS measurement and evaluation technology makes it possible for the first time to capture the electrochemical fingerprint of each battery and test it for its suitability for the application in question. The ExaMight software performs these assessments fully automatically, documents all data and also enables further analyses or data visualizations. Depending on the respective assessment, the quality assurance system can directly sort cells for further use.
